More than 1,000 monuments and memorials dot the silent Pennsylvania fields to remind your group of the heavy sacrifice of both North and South. As you climb the knobby hills and Little Round Top, the Gettysburg battlefield will stir up powerful visions of the past.
Colonial Williamsburg
This restoration has set a standard of excellence unmatched worldwide. In the many houses open to the public, costumed guides and craftspeople give you fascinating glimpses into the lives and livelihoods of the colonists. The gardens, architecture, furnishings and works of art accurately reflect the 18th century, when this city was capital of England's largest colony in the New World. Trace the footsteps of Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry and other leaders who shaped the destiny of our nation.
Annapolis
In the nearly 350 years since settlers arrived at Spa Creek, Annapolis has developed from a port town to the Chesapeake Bay, to colonial capital of the United States, to provincial market town, to the present day government center and tourist attraction. Our visit includes the famous United States Naval Academy and the Maryland State House, the oldest continuous-use capital building in the United States. You will have ample time to walk the narrow streets and browse in the many unique shops and stores.
Yorktown Victory Center
Feel the exhilaration at the site where George Washington's troops defeated the British in the last major battle of the American Revolution. Watch the story unfold through intriguing exhibits and a re-creation of the 18th century military encampment. You'll be spellbound as soldiers and leaders share recollections and dreams. As you climb the redoubts and gaze across the York River, you'll understand why American patriots offered their lives, fortunes and honor for the cause of independence.
Jamestown Festival Park
Visit the site where America was born! In the spring of 1607 - 13 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock- 104 adventurers established the first English settlement in the New World. In this re-created setting, you'll step back in time to the world of John Smith and Pocahontas. You'll experience the day-to-day life of the Colonists, discover Powhatan traditions and come to understand the interaction of these distinct cultures.
Charlottesville/Monticello
Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville is the home of the University of Virginia and is indelibly identified with the university's founder, Thomas Jefferson. We'll visit the original dormitories and the striking rotunda. After lunch (on your own) at the restored Michie Tavern, we move on to Monticello. Jefferson's design for his home influenced several generations of public and private buildings. You will also have time to explore the grounds and the gardens on your own.
Baltimore
Baltimore is the northernmost southern city and the southernmost northern city, with many delightful ethnic neighborhoods. There's also the famous "Inner Harbor" with its fashion and food pavilions, National Aquarium, World Trade Center, and many ships. A riding tour will take us past Babe Ruth's house, the graveyard with the remains of Edgar Allen Poe, the Peabody Conservatory, and the first Washington Monument. Our final stop will be Fort McHenry, site of the War of 1812 battle that inspired Francis Scott Key's anthem.
